FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy or HBOT is a medical treatment that enhances the body’s natural healing process by providing 100% pure oxygen to a patient in a chamber where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. Every cell of the body is dependent upon oxygen for the growth, repair, and preservation of cellular functioning. Oxygen is also crucial for proper and efficient healing of most injuries.

  • The patients breathe 100% pure oxygen under elevated pressure, which produces an increase in the amount of oxygen carried in the bloodstream. The air we normally breathe only contains 19-21% of this essential element. Under typical circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the body only by red blood cells. However, because HBOT forces oxygen into the body under pressure, oxygen dissolves into all the body’s fluids, including the plasma, the Lymph, and the cerebrospinal fluids surrounding the brain and spinal cord. These fluids can carry the extra oxygen even to areas where circulation is poor or blocked. With this increased oxygen supply, the damaged tissues in the body have an increased chance of healing, as the oxygen concentration in the affected areas can reach up to 1,200% the normal concentration

Extra oxygen also facilitates the healing process and enhances the body’s white blood cells’ ability to fight infection. It can promote the development of new capillaries, the tiny blood vessels that connect arteries to veins. It also helps the body build new connective tissue. Consequently, HBOT may assist the body’s organs in functioning more efficiently altogether.

  • Hyperbaric treatment is a non-invasive, painless, and effective treatment for a variety of conditions. There are currently 15 conditions treatable with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, which are approved by CMS and FDA and recognized by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society (UHMS) . However, there are numerous "off-label" uses for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy that doctors may prescribe, which are documented with scientific evidence that is stronger than that of the FDA approved conditions.

Our medical team thoroughly evaluates each patient to determine their eligibility for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and tailors the treatment to their specific needs, ensuring a personalized and individualized approach to care.

  • Every patient is unique, for that reason our medical team must evaluate each patient according to their condition and response to therapy to determine the number of treatments needed. The range is between 10 to 60 treatments, depending on the purpose and condition being treated. Approximately the treatment last from 60-120 minutes. But all this will be established on the evaluation to customized the treatment to your unique needs.

  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to treat all conditions which benefit from increased tissue oxygen, as well as infections where it can be used for its antibiotic properties, either as the primary therapy, or in conjunction with other drugs. The following conditions are treated effectively with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy:

    • Acute carbon monoxide intoxication.

    • Decompression illness.

    • Gas embolism.

    • Gas gangrene.

    • Acute traumatic peripheral ischemia.

    • Crush injuries and suturing of severed limbs.

    • Progressive necrotizing infections (necrotizing fasciitis).

    • Acute peripheral arterial insufficiency.

    • Preparation and preservation of compromised skin grafts.

    • Chronic refractory osteomyelitis.

    • Osteoradionecrosis.

    • Soft tissue radionecrosis.

    • Cyanide poisoning.

    • Actinomycosis.

    • Diabetic wounds of the lower extremities.

    • Other Inflammatory Diseases.*

    • Sport Injuries.*

    • Athlete Performance and Recovery.*

*"Off-label" conditions that may not be covered by your health insurance. All other conditions mentioned are considered “on-label” currently covered by most private Health Insurance, Medicare and Medicaid.

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is very comfortable and painless. During the session, oxygen flow begins immediately, and the pressure inside the chamber is gradually increased. You may experience a fullness sensation in your ears, similar to flying in an airplane, but this should subside within 10 to 15 minutes. Once the treatment pressure is reached, you can simply relax and breathe normally. As the session comes to an end, the pressure will be gradually decreased, which may result in a slight popping sensation in your ears as the pressure adjusts. Our experienced technicians will be with you throughout the entire process to ensure your comfort.

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a non-invasive and natural therapy with minimal to no side effects. However, some patients may experience mild discomfort in the ear drum, which occurs in approximately 10% of cases. Other rare and temporary side effects such as changes in vision, dizziness, or lightheadedness, may also occur. Although rare, there is a risk of oxygen toxicity.

  • During your evaluation, you'll receive a full overview of what to expect during the treatment, including a list of permitted and prohibited items. For your comfort, we'll provide 100% cotton scrubs, sheets, and blankets. However, most other items aren't allowed in the hyperbaric chamber. Before entering the chamber, our nurse will inspect and approve all items and clothing to ensure compliance with our policies.

    Prohibited items include:

    • Deodorants

    • Lotions and Skincare products.

    • Perfumes

    • Hair products

    • Makeup

    • Jewelry

    • Hair accessories, including wigs.

    • Hearing aids

    • Hard contact lenses

    • Dentures

    • Prostheses

    • Nail polish

    • Medication

    • Any clothing with buttons, snaps, Velcro, iron-on decals, or under-wiring.

    • Socks

    • Electronics including cellphones.

    • Newspapers, books or magazines.

Our staff will monitor these policies during each treatment session.

  • To ensure a comfortable and effective treatment session, we advise patients to avoid eating or drinking (especially carbonated beverages) prior to their appointment. Certain medications and supplements may not be compatible with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, so it's important to provide your medical team with a full list of these during your initial evaluation and keep them updated. To maximize the benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, it's important to avoid smoking during the entire treatment protocol as it restricts blood vessels and increases the accumulation of carbon monoxide and other waste, which can hinder the therapy's effectiveness. Additionally, it's best to avoid alcohol for at least 8 hours before your appointment.

  • All of our Clinics are equipped with TV monitors where patients can enjoy watching some cable TV or movies. These are managed individually from outside the chamber. Other patients enjoy sleeping during their treatment.

Each Hyperbaric Chamber has a telephone which patients can use to communicate with our nurses for any additional needs.

  • Our facilities uses state-of-the-art Monoplace Hyperbaric Chambers from Environmental Tectonics. These chambers are made of metal and acrylic which differ from the soft or mild variety in that they deliver 100% oxygen vs. room air (which is only about 20% oxygen), and are able to reach greater atmospheric pressure levels. This allows for the treatment of a wider variety of health conditions more efficiently and effectively.
